If you are looking to apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa (often referred to as a UK tourist visa), you can generally visit the UK for purposes such as tourism, holidays, visiting friends or family, and certain short activities.
UK Tourist / Standard Visitor Visa
If your nationality requires a visa to enter the UK, the usual steps to apply for UK visa are as follows:
1. Determine whether you need a visa or an ETA. Some nationalities can enter the UK with an ETA instead.
2. Check if you need a UK visa.
3. Apply online for a UK Standard Visitor visa. Typically, you can submit your application up to 3 months before your intended travel date.
4. Pay the visa fee. As of August 2026, a standard tourist visa valid for up to 6 months costs £135.
5. Prepare the necessary supporting documents. Depending on your situation, these may include:
- A passport valid for your entire stay in the UK
- Bank statements or proof of your ability to afford the trip
- Evidence of your job, business, studies, or other ties to your home country
- Your travel plans and accommodation details
- Invitation or support documents if someone in the UK will be hosting or funding your visit
- Certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh
6. Attend a visa application centre to provide your passport, fingerprints, photograph, and any required documents.
7. Wait for a decision regarding your application. Generally, standard visitor applications made outside the UK are processed within 3 weeks after your identity and supporting documents have been submitted, though some cases may take longer.
Important
You need to demonstrate that you are a genuine visitor, have the financial means to pay for your trip, and intend to leave the UK once your visit is complete.
